The exhibition hall was built for Wu Hongen, a Han Lin in the Qing Dynasty, courtesy name Zemin and art name Chunhai. Wu was influenced by his great-grandfather Zeng Yuhuang since his childhood, which led him to be so diligent and inquisitive that he always had a book in his hands. He was admitted by the Imperial College as a fine scholar, and served as an Expectant Official of the Construction Department under the Ministry of Works in the 29th year of Emperor Daoguang’s reign (1849); he received the Jin Shi degree in the 1st year of Emperor Tongzhi’s reign; he served as a Compiler of the Imperial Academy and Editor of the Department of History in the 4th year of Emperor Tongzhi’s reign (1865); and later he served as Supervisory Censor of Shandong and Yunnan in the 10th year of Emperor Tongzhi’s reign (1871). At that time, Wu Hongen was prestigious for his literary talent which was also known in the capital, he was also hired to preside over the Beijing “Goodness Academy” and “Willingness Academy”. In addition, he received hundreds of students. In the Imperial examination in the 2nd year of Emperor Guangxu’s reign, “Top three of the Palace exam” were all his students, which simply became a far-spread story at the time.
