In Anju, the Huguang Guild Hall was established in the mid-Ming Dynasty and destroyed in the war in the late Ming Dynasty. This hall was rebuilt during Emperor Qianlong’s reign in the Qing Dynasty, and then again destroyed in the fire during Emperor Xianfeng’s reign. Later on, during Emperor Guangxu’s reign, it was again rebuilt under the sponsorship of gentries from Hunan and Hubei Provinces. In 2003, it was repaired under the sponsorship of Anju Reeling Mill in Tongliang County. The hall is located in the south of Anju Ancient City. It shares a wall with the Mazu Temple (the Temple of Queen of Heaven) on the left and with the Qi’an Guild Hall (the Temple of Emperor Lord) on the right. Containing a stage, the hall covers an area of 2,200 square meters, with the area of structure being 1,387 square meters. This hall is beside the mountain, with its depth from low to high. On the hall gate, there is a phrase meaning “Permanent Dependence”. Stepping from the theater stage to the wide courtyard, people would see the indistinct trail of weathering on the wall. On front pillars of the ancient theater stage, there are exquisite carvings where images of immortals are vivid. The courtyard is uniquely structured and rooms orderly arranged. On stone balustrades, there are auspicious patterns themed by various auspicious beasts like lion, kylin, Chinese dragon and so on. On the front and rear handrails of the courtyard, there are character patterns representing 24 stories on filial piety. This whole hall is spacious enough to accommodate more than a thousand literati and plebs holding a meeting.
