This temple, also known as Mazu Temple or Fujian Guild Hall, was firstly built in the Ming Dynasty on the southern street of Anju Ancient City, to the front right of Martial Temple, adjoining with the left wall of Huguang Guild Hall, with its gate facing the street and its back next to the mountain behind which there is a temple for worshiping the legendary Lord of Sichuan Province. The Temple of Queen of Heaven was built under the sponsorship of gentries from Fujian.

Mazu, formerly named Lin Mo, was born in Futian County, Fujian Province, on March 23, 960 AD. She learned to swim, recognized tide sound, and read horoscope from childhood. After growing up, she was even able to change into wood and attach to a boat, and thus saved people from marine perils once and once again. She ever burned her own house with a torch to guide the direction for lost merchant ships. She swore to be single all her life and help others in need. On the 9th day of the ninth lunar month, 987 AD, she sacrificed her life for saving a boat in danger in Meizhou Bay. After her death, her soul still lingered on the sea. When storms tossed and masts broke, Mazu turned into a girl in red standing on a cloud to guide the direction for boats when they were going to be destroyed by heavy winds and high tides. In the past one thousand years or more, people built temples everywhere for memorizing this brave and kindhearted girl. From the 5th year of Xuanhe during Huizong’s reign in the Northern Song Dynasty (1123 AD) to the Qing Dynasty, a total of 14 emperors issued imperial orders to add honorary titles to her for 36 times in all. She has become the widely respectable “Goddess in the Heaven” and “Goddess on the Sea”.

Anju is located at the intersection of the Qiong River and Fu River, where a lot of merchants assembled in ancient times due to well-developed shipping systems there. Whenever merchant ships were going to set sail, captains would offer incense at the Mazu Temple to pray for safety. On each birthday and deathday, a grand worship ceremony would be held at the Temple of Queen of Heaven in hopes that the wind and rain come in their time and the country flourishes and people live in peace.
