Anju Ancient City, established as a county in the 8th year of Kaihuang’s reign in the Sui Dynasty (588 AD), is also called Chishui County because there is a brook called Chishui. In Southern Song Dynasty, the government office was moved to Longduo Mountain for avoiding the chaos caused by war. Then, in Yuan Dynasty, the county was abolished and integrated into Hezhou and Tongliang. In the 16th year of Chenghua’s reign in the Ming Dynasty, it was restored as a county, and renamed Anju connoting people living and working in peace and contentment. In this ancient town, there are nine city gates built formerly of bricks and wood and then of rocks from the mid-Ming Dynasty. Located in the south of Anju Ancient City, the Starlight Gate is adjacent to Martial Temple (i.e. a temple enshrining and worshiping Guan Yu, a famous general in the Three Kingdoms period) and County Government Office. In Anju, the south is higher than the north in altitude, so the Starlight Gate is higher in altitude than other city gates. It’s said that the people, standing on the tower of this gate and looking up into the sky on the fifteenth night of the eighth lunar month (Mid-autumn Festival), would see a silver, jade-like round moon around which stars glint. If lucky enough, people might see an imaginative sight that the Jade Hare dives into their arms.
